B R Ambedkar was born on 14th April 1891 in the small cantonment town of Mhow, Madhya Pradesh. The town of Mhow was renamed to Dr Ambedkarnagar in 2003 in honour of Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar.
B R Ambedkar Biography
Born to Ramji Maloji Sakpal, a subedar in the British Indian Army and Bhimbai Sakpal, Ambedkar belonged to the Mahar Caste. He grew up facing social exclusion and discrimination throughout his life and yet emerged as one of the most influential personalities in the modern history of India.
Ambedkar was a brilliant student and excelled academically. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in economics and political science from Bombay University in 1912 and went on to study law at Gray’s Inn in London, where he earned a Doctorate in Law.
B R Ambedkar as a Social Reformer
After returning to India in 1923 after completing his studies in London, Ambedkar became actively involved in the struggle for Dalit rights and social reform. He founded the Bahishkrit Hitakarini Sabha in 1924 to work for the welfare of the Dalits and later became the leader of the Dalit Mahasabha.
Ambedkar was appointed to the Bombay Legislative Council in 1926, and he used his position to advocate for the rights of the Dalits and other marginalized communities. He was instrumental in the passage of the Depressed Classes Act of 1935, which provided reserved seats for Dalits in provincial legislatures.
