Bhagat Singh Biography: Birthday, Image, Contribution & Death

Bhagat Singh is one of the influential and impactful revolutionary and Freedom Fighters who lead the Indian Freedom Movement in India. At the age of 23 years, he was hanged to death by the Britishers after a long trial for his revolutionary acts. He was born on 28th September 1907 to Kishan Singh and Vidyavati in Banga, Lyallpur District (now Pakistan). His sacrifices ignited the massive flames of patriotism in the hearts of the youths of India.

Birth Date of Bhagat Singh

On 28th September 1907, Bhagat Singh was born in a Punjabi family in Banga, Lyallpur District (now Pakistan). His father, Kishan Singh, was a patriot and actively participated in protests against unfair and oppressive Bills and Laws made and executed by the Britishers. His mother, a housewife, always supported the idealogy of her husband and raise her kids with the same zeal and dedication.

Bhagat Singh was a great patriot and he started participating in freedom movements at a very young age. He was highly moved by the Jalianwalah Bagh Massacre and started actively participating in the Non-Cooperative Movement initiated by Mahatma Gandhi in 1920. However, when Gandhi Ji called off the movement in 1922, he felt betrayed and disillusioned for a time being. This was a major turning point in Bhagat Singh’s life as his ideology, philosophy and approach to attain independence for the nation changed tectonically.

He joined National College in Lahore which was established by Lala Lajpat Rai who eventually inspired his ideology. In 1928, while protesting against the Simon Commission, Lala Lajpat Rai was singled out and brutally beaten up during the lathi charge. Later he succumbed to his injuries and died on 17th November 1928. Bhagat Singh decided to avenge this brutal murder.

Contribution of Bhagat Singh

Until 1928, Bhagat Singh was actively participating in protests, writing insightful and critical articles against the British government in various newspapers. He would print and distribute leaflets in public to explain the brutality of the British Government against innocent people and encourage people to active participation in the Freedom Movements. By this time his ideologies have turned Marxist and Socialist.

Although after the death of Lala Lajpat Rai, Bhagat Singh chalked out a plan to avenge his death by murdering Scott, the Superintendent of Police who ordered to single out Lala Ji during the Lathi charge. However, Bhagat Singh and his associate ended up killing J.P. Saunder, the Assistant Superintendent of Police as they failed to recognise Scott. To avoid arrest, Bhagat Singh shaved off his beard and hair (which was grossly against his religion) and left Lahore in disguise.

On 8th April 1929, Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt exploded bombs and distributed leaflets while chanting Inquilab Zindabad. He was arrested for the offence and tried for it. During the Trial, he raised concerns about the brutality and oppressive measures taken by the Britsih Government against the innocent people of India. Eventually, all his associates were arrested and tried for various offences.

During his stay in the prison, he protested against the inhuman conditions in which the Indian prisoners were kept without proper sanitation, hygienic food and basic amenities. He and his associates went on a hunger strike as a protest which lasted for 116 days.

Death of Bhagat Singh

As the trial continued and was simultaneously covered by the media, Bhagat Singh’s views and opinions started catching the attention of the youth of India, they felt more inclined to his ideology and were ready to sacrifice their lives to attain Freedom of their motherland. This attracted British Government’s attention as well and the trial was put on the fast track under a special tribune where the defendants were not required to be present for the trials.

On 7th October 1930, a 300-page verdict came which declared Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru guilty of murdering Saunders. On 23rd March 1931, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru were hanged until death at 7:30 am.
