Bihar to Introduce 4-year Graduation Courses in Universities

Bihar’s state universities will soon offer four-year bachelor’s degree programs using the choice-based credit system (CBCS), according to a statement from Raj Bhavan. This decision was made following the National Education Policy-2020 recommendation and a high-level meeting chaired by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, the chancellor of state universities.

The CBCS lets students choose interdisciplinary and skill-oriented courses, including those from other disciplines, based on their interests, learning needs, and abilities. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has prepared a four-year course structure for undergraduate programs that have already been implemented by universities like Delhi University.

A senior official from the education department said that the revised course structure emphasizes skill development from the first year. The undergraduate programs will have eight semesters, and students will receive a certificate upon completing each year of two semesters for the 4-year Graduation Courses in Bihar Universities.

This new system will offer students the flexibility to choose courses that match their interests, helping them develop a solid foundation for their future careers. During the first year of CBCS and semester system implementation, universities will hold their admission process. However, from the following academic session, all universities will adopt a centralized admission process. A committee of experts will be formed to design the curriculum for the first year of the new system.
