Current Governors in India
A Governor is the constitutional head of the state according to Article 154 of the Constitution of India. Article 154 also states that every state should have a Governor, therefore, all 28 states in India have a Governor appointed by the President of India. The term of a Governor in India is 5 years and they hold office at the pleasure of the President of India. Eligibility Criteria for Governor of States in India
As per the Constitution of India, a person must meet the following eligibility criteria to become a Governor of a state in India:
- The person must be a citizen of India.
- The person must be at least 35 years old.
- There are no specific educational qualifications required to become a Governor of a state.
- The person cannot hold any office of profit under the central or state government or any local authority.
- The person cannot be a Member of Parliament (MP) or a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of any state or union territory.
- The person must not be an active member of any political party or participate in any political activity.
- Once appointed as the Governor, the person must not take part in any political activity and should maintain a neutral stance while performing their duties.
- The person cannot be an employee of the Central or State Government or any Public Sector Undertaking.
- The person must be of sound mind and not have been convicted of any criminal offence.
- The person cannot be a Governor of more than one state.
