The State of Maharashtra was formed after the dissolution of the Bombay State in 1960. Yashwantrao Chavan was the First Chief Minister of Maharashtra. He was also the last Chief Minister of Bombay State. Marotrao Kannamwar succeeded Yashwantrao Chavan after the 1962 Assembly Elections and was the only CM to die while in office. Vasantrao Naik has been the longest-serving CM of Maharashtra from 1963 to 1975 (11 years). Eknath Shinde is the current Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

In a recent development, Former NCP Leader, Ajit Pawar has been appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra on 2 July 2023. Pawar has joined the BJP- Shiv Sena (Shinde) Led NDA Government along with 8 other MLAs. Earlier, the post of Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra was held by BJP Leader David Fadnavis.
