Nirmala Sitharaman, born on August 18, 1959, is an Indian economist and politician, and a prominent leader in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Since 2019, she has held the positions of Minister of Finance and Minister of Corporate Affairs in the Government of India. Sitharaman has been a Rajya Sabha member representing Karnataka since 2016, having previously represented Andhra Pradesh from 2014 to 2016.

On 12 June, Nirmala Sitharaman took up her role as the Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister for her second consecutive term. She is set to unveil the FY ’25 Budget shortly, which will define the priorities and direction of the Modi 3.0 government for the development of Viksit Bharat.
Nirmala Sitharaman has been serving as India’s Finance Minister since 2019, becoming the country’s first full-time female Finance Minister on May 31, 2019. Prior to this, she held the position of Defence Minister starting from September 3, 2017. Sitharaman has been a member of the Rajya Sabha since 2010 and has been associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party since 2006. She is an economist who transitioned into a political career.

Nirmala Sitharam was born in Madurai, Madras State (now Tamil Nadu) in a Tamil Iyenger Family to Savitri and Narayanan Sitharaman. She is an alumnus of Jawaharlal Nehru University where she completed her M.A. and M.Phil in 1984. She is a member of the Rajya Sabha and the Finance Minister of India.

Nirmala Sitharaman Political Career
Nirmala Sitharaman came into politics in 2006 when she joined Bharatiya Janata Party. She became a Rajya Sabha member in 2010. In 2014, she became a Junior Minister in Narendra Modi’s Cabinet. In 2017 she was appointed as the Miniter of Defence and later firmly headed the critical Balakot Air Strike carried out by the Indian Air Force. Since 2019, Nirmala Sitharaman has been heading the Ministry of Finance and this is the fifth consecutive year that she has presented the Union Budget of India.
