Sawan Maha Shivratri 2023, Significance, Muhurat, and Auspicious Yogas

Sawan Shivratri holds a special significance in the month of Shravan. According to religious beliefs, observing fast and worshipping Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati on Sawan Maha Shivratri brings happiness and prosperity in married life, as well as in the family. This year, Sawan Shivratri fast will be observed on Saturday, 15 July 2023, and it holds immense importance for devotees.

The Chaturdashi date of the Krishna Paksha of the month of Sawan marks the occasion of Sawan Maha Shivratri. Worshipping Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati on this day is believed to fulfil all the wishes and bring happiness and prosperity into one’s life. The fast is observed from evening to the next morning, and devotees worship the divine couple in four distinct intervals.

The Shubh Muhurat for Sawan Shivratri 2023 begins with the first hour of worship from 07:21 PM in the evening to 09:54 PM at night. The second Prahar Puja commences from 09:54 PM-midnight to 12:37 AM midnight, followed by the third Prahar Puja from 12:37 AM to 03:00 AM. The fourth and last Prahar Puja takes place from 03:00 AM to 05:33 AM. Devotees can choose the timing that suits them to perform their prayers and seek blessings.

On this auspicious day, three highly favourable yogas are being formed according to the Hindu calendar. Vriddhi Yoga, Dhruv Yoga, and Mrigashira Nakshatra align on this special day. Vriddhi Yoga will persist until 08:22 AM in the morning, after which Dhruv Yoga will commence. Additionally, the Mrigashira Nakshatra will remain until 12:23 PM on 16 July. It is believed that reciting prayers during these auspicious times fulfils all the desires of devotees.

The month of Sawan is also known for the Kavad Yatra, a pilgrimage where devotees carry holy water from sacred rivers and offer it to Lord Shiva. On the day of Sawan Maha Shivratri, Kanwariyas embark on long journeys, chanting the name of Lord Shiva and performing Jalabhishek, the ritual of offering water to the deity. This act is believed to free the devotees from all their problems and grant them blessings.
