As the name suggests, the Tripura, Manipur, and Meghalaya Foundation Day 2023 is celebrated to commemorate the historic day when Tripura, Manipur, and Meghalaya attained statehood on 21st January 1972. Attaining statehood is strategic in the parlance of Administration and Development.
History of Tripura, Manipur, and Meghalaya Foundation Day 2023
There are 7 states in the North Eastern part of India and combined they are called “Seven Sisters”. Though the North East has always been a part of India not all these states attained statehood at the same time. In other words the Seven Sisters didn’t look earlier the way we see them now.
When India attained independence in 1947, the North Easter part was composed of the Assam plains of the old Assam Province, the hill districts, and the North Easter Frontier Tracts (NEFT) of the North-Eastern borderland as well as the Princely States of Tripura and Manipur.
Later in 1949, Manipur and Tripura were granted the status of Union Territories and on 1st December 1963, Nagaland has declared a state. Meghalaya became an autonomous state within Assam as per the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution through the Assam Reorganisation (Meghalaya) Act 1969. However, it took some time for Meghalaya to attain statehood.
Finally, on 21st January 1972, Manipur, Tripura and Meghalaya attained statehood under the North East Reorganisation Act of 1972. Later, Mizoram emerged as a full-fledged state in 1987 under the Mizo Accord of 1986.
When are Tripura, Manipur, and Meghalaya Foundation Day 2023?
The Tripura, Manipur, and Meghalaya Foundation Day 2023 is observed on the 21st of January every year. As per the North East Reorganisation Act of 1972, Tripura, Manipur, and Meghalaya became separate states under the Indian Constitution on 21st January 1972. These three states had a varied historic, cultural and geographic backgrounds and yet they share their foundation day together.
The Seven Sisters
There are seven states in North East India. These sevens states are combined called the Seven Sisters. These Seven states are Assam, Tripura, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Manipur. Among these seven states, Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya attained full-fledged statehood on 21st January 1972 under the North East Reorganisation Act of 1972. This year, Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya will celebrate their 51st Foundation Day with great pomp and show. Mizoram is the last one among the seven sisters as a full fledge state in 1987.
