As per UGC Chairmen Tweet , University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a directive pertaining to the utilization of National Eligibility Test (NET) scores as an alternative entrance criterion for admission to Ph.D. programs. Effective from the academic session 2024-25 onwards, universities and Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) have been authorized to accept NET scores in lieu of their respective entrance examinations for Ph.D. admissions.

UGC NET scores for PhD Admission

Previously, UGC NET scores were primarily used for awarding Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) and determining eligibility for Assistant Professor positions for those with a Master’s degree. However, many universities conducted their own entrance tests for PhD programs, requiring students to take multiple exams.

To streamline the process and implement the National Education Policy 2020, the UGC formed an expert committee to review the provisions of the UGC NET. Based on their recommendations, the UGC has decided to allow universities to use NET scores for PhD admissions starting in the 2024-25 academic session. This eliminates the need for separate university entrance exams.
