University Grants Commission (UGC) has made amendments to the minimum qualification requirements for the appointment of Assistant Professors in universities and colleges. The UGC Regulations 2018, which lay down the guidelines for such appointments, have been revised to reflect these changes.
According to the UGC Regulations 2018 and 2nd Amendment, the minimum qualification for Assistant Professors was set as NET/SET/SLET. Earlier UGC stated that a Ph.D. degree would be a mandatory requirement for direct recruitment to the position of Assistant Professor in universities, effective from July 1, 2021. Recognizing the need for a transitional period, an amendment was introduced on October 12, 2021, extending the applicability of this condition until July 1, 2023.
UGC Revised Eligibility for Assistant Professor
According to these amendments, NET/SLET/SET is the minimum requirement for Master’s degree holders, while those holding a Ph.D. degree are exempted from this requirement. The eligibility criteria prescribed for various disciplines, such as Arts, Commerce, Humanities, Education, Law, Social Sciences, Sciences, Languages, Library Science, Physical Education, and Journalism & Mass Communication, are clearly stated under UGC Regulations 2018.
UGC yesterday has released notice to explain the eligibility for recruitment of Assistant professor in University and Colleges. Candidate qualified NET/SLET/SET will be considered as the minimum requirement for direct recruitment of Assistant Professors who do not possess a Ph.D. degree. Furthermore, it should be emphasized that holders of Ph.D. degrees awarded in accordance with the UGC Regulations and its amendments are exempted from the requirement of NET/SLET/SET. This exemption allows them to be eligible for direct recruitment to the post of Assistant Professor.
The revised amendments introduced by the UGC reflect the evolving standards and requirements in the field of higher education. By making Ph.D. degree as qualification for Assistant Professors, the UGC aims to promote research and academic excellence. These changes ensure that individuals with advanced research expertise and qualifications are given preference in direct recruitment to teaching positions.
Universities and colleges across the country will now need to align their recruitment processes with the amended UGC Regulations 2018. Aspiring Assistant Professors, both with and without Ph.D. degrees, should be aware of these changes and ensure they meet the revised qualification requirements when seeking teaching positions.
The UGC’s amendments are expected to have a significant impact on the recruitment and selection processes for Assistant Professors, encouraging a greater focus on research and advanced qualifications. These changes are in line with the UGC’s commitment to improving the quality of education and fostering a research-oriented environment in higher education institutions throughout the country.
