University Grants Commission has revised the salary for the Guest Lecturers. It is great news for the candidates interested in applying for the post of Guest Lecturer in various Universities across India.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) held its 537th meeting on December 10, 2018, to discuss the enhancement of honorarium rates for guest faculty in universities and colleges and in 2019 the following resolutions of revision of salary were made.
UGC Revised Guest Lecturer Salary Notice
The UGC resolved to enhance the honorarium for guest faculty to Rs.1500/- per lecture, with a maximum limit of Rs.50,000/- per month. This substantial increase in honorarium aims to recognize the valuable expertise and contributions made by guest faculty members who impart knowledge and enrich the learning experience of students. Earlier, it was Rs. 1000/- per lecture with a maximum limit of Rs. 30,000/-
Moreover, guest faculty members will now be appointed only against sanctioned posts. This provision ensures that the appointment process aligns with the existing faculty structure and promotes accountability in hiring practices. However, the UGC acknowledges that some universities may face a shortage of sanctioned posts as per the teaching workload. In such cases, an additional 20% of guest faculty appointments above the sanctioned posts may be made, enabling universities to cater to the educational needs of students effectively.
The qualifications for guest faculty are to remain the same as those required for regular Assistant Professors. In addition to that, the selection procedure for guest Lecturers will remain similar to that of regular Assistant Professors, with a specified composition of the Selection Committee.
Furthermore, the resolution states that superannuated teachers may also be considered for engagement as guest faculty, subject to a maximum age limit of 70 years. This provision acknowledges the wealth of experience and expertise possessed by retired teachers, providing them with an opportunity to continue contributing to the academic community.
Lastly, guest faculty members will not be entitled to benefits such as allowances, pensions, gratuities, and leave, which are admissible to regular teachers. While this provision may seem restrictive, it aligns with the temporary nature of guest faculty appointments and ensures clarity regarding their employment status.
The circular was released by UGC in 2019 stating an increase in salary for the Guest Lecturer. The revision of salary has been made in various Universities, however, various Universities across the country is yet to implement salary hike.
These resolutions aim to recognize the contributions of guest lecturers, maintain academic standards, and attract highly qualified individuals to these roles. The increased honorarium and transparent appointment procedures will motivate guest lecturers and enhance the teaching and learning experience for students. By implementing these guidelines effectively, universities and colleges can strengthen the academic ecosystem in India.
