World Teachers’ Day 2023 is observed on 5 October 2023 globally since 1994. UNESCO or United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation proclaimed on 5 October 1994 that henceforth World Teachers’ Day will be celebrated across the globe. The day is dedicated to the teachers who relentlessly work hard to build the future through imparting education and knowledge.

World Teachers’ Day 2023 History

World Teachers’ Day was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1994 to recognize and celebrate the important role of teachers in society. The idea for World Teachers’ Day germinated in 1966 when a conference in Paris called for the recognition of teachers’ status and contributions on a global scale.

The conference was organised by UNESCO and the International Labour Organisation (ILO). However, it took another 28 years for the UNESCO to dedicate a particular date for the celebration of the World Teachers’ Day. Since 1994, World Teachers’ Day has been celebrated annually on 5 October.

World Teachers’ Day 2023 Significance

World Teachers’ Day serves as an opportunity to acknowledge the vital role teachers play in shaping the future of individuals and societies. World Teachers’ Day highlights the need for adequate support and investment in education and the teaching profession.

The World Teachers’ Day also raises awareness of the challenges that teachers face, including low salaries, lack of resources, and difficult working conditions, and advocates for better working conditions and professional development opportunities for educators.

The theme for the  World Teachers’ Day 2023 is “The Teachers We Need for the Education We Want: The Global Imperative to Reverse the Teacher Shortage”. The aim of this World Teachers’ Day 2023 Theme is to increase the number of teachers to curb the shortage of teachers globally. The theme also focuses on how the education system, families, communities, societies and other social communities support and appreciate the contribution of teachers.
