Coastal Clean-Up campaign in News

  • Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Earth Sciences Dr Jitendra Singh informed that more than 200 ton of garbage, mainly single use plastic, have been removed from the sea coasts during the first 20 days of the ongoing 75-day Coastal Clean-Up campaign.
  • Dr Jitendra Singh also noted with satisfaction that so far more than 5200 volunteers from 24 States have already registered for the 75-day long Coastal Clean-Up campaign.

Coastal Clean-Up campaign

  • About: Coastal Clean-Up campaign is a 75-day campaign launched by the government to clean up coastal beaches and raise awareness about “Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar”.
  • Campaign Duration: 75-day Coastal Clean-Up campaign was launched on 5th July, 2022 and will culminate on “International Coastal Clean-up Day” on 17th September 2022.
  • Mandate: Coastal Clean-Up campaign aims to motivate the entire nation to keep the 7500 Kilometres long coastal line of India clean, safe and healthy for mankind.
  • Key Activities: Apart from removal of garbage from the sea coasts, activities like campaign pledge, NukkadNatak, Cycle Rally for Plastic se Azadi, Beach cleaning and Plantation, Sensitization of local communities about the coastal clean-up campaign were carried out in the last 20 days.
  • Parent Ministry: 75-day Coastal Clean-Up campaign is initiated by the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
    • Ministry of Earth Sciences is spearheading it but at the same time seeking a “whole of government” approach.
  • Participation: Ministry of Earth Sciences to rope in NGOs, citizen groups, children and youth forums, corporates, non-profit organisations, consular staff as well as the Municipal Corporations of the Coastal States to convert it into a Jan Andolan.
    • The Ministers and the MPs pledged full support to the first-of-its-kind and longest running coastal clean-up campaign in the world.

 

Coastal Clean-Up Campaign Significance

  • Coastal Clean-Up Campaign is the longest running coastal clean-up campaign in the world that aims to ensure highest participation towards coastal clean-up and spread awareness about coastal cleaning.
  • The Coastal Clean-Up Campaign will also promote sustainable coastal tourism along with ensuring favourable habitation for the aquatic life and marine animals who are endangered by littering on the coasts.
  • Safe Ocean Water, Safe Sea Food: Coastal Clean-Up Campaign will help in removing toxins from seafood and the water, resulting in better human health, especially in the coastal regions.
