- Recently, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, GoI, in association with India Ports Global Ltd, conducted a workshop on the ‘Linking Chabahar Port with INSTC’ in Mumbai.
Linking Chabahar Port with INSTC
- The Chabahar Port, located in Iran, is the commercial transit centre for the region, especially Central Asia.
- The strategic location of Chabahar has a great advantage for developing it as a transshipment hub.
- The Chabahar Port’s deep draft of 16 m is suitable for handling large shipment vessels. The Port lies close to some of the busiest trade routes in the world.
- The region comes under the Asia-Europe, Asia-Asia trade route, which carries large cargo volumes.
What is International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC)?
- About: The International North–South Transport Corridor (INSTC) is a multi-modal transportation route linking the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf to the Caspian Sea via Iran and onward to northern Europe via St. Petersburg in Russia.
- The INSTC envisages the movement of goods-
- From Mumbai (India) to Shahid Beheshti Port – Chabahar (Iran) by sea,
- From Chabahar to Bandar-e- Anzali (an Iranian port on the Caspian Sea) by road, and
- Then from Bandar-e- Anzali to Astrakhan (a Caspian port in the Russian Federation) by ship across the Caspian Sea, and
- After that from Astrakhan to other regions of the Russian Federation and further into Europe by Russian railways were highlighted by the speakers during the workshop.
- Significance: INSTC is India’s vision and initiative to reduce the time taken for EXIM shipments to reach Russia, Europe and enter the central Asian markets.
- Successful activation of the corridor will help connect India to Russia and Central Asian countries.

- Ministry of Tourism, Government of India is participating in FITUR international travel exhibition from 18th to 22nd January in Madrid.
India at FITUR International Travel Exhibition
- About: FITUR International Travel Exhibition is one of the world’s largest international travel exhibitions.
- India’s participation at FITUR is significant to step up the recovery of inbound tourism to pre-pandemic levels.
- India Pavilion: Ministry of Tourism has taken a space of 253 sq. mtr., with over 30 participants co-exhibiting with the India Pavilion to participate in the Exhibition.
- Inauguration of India Pavilion was done with Ribbon Cutting followed by Indian cultural performances and Yoga sessions.
- After the inauguration, the Indian delegation and participants went around the India Pavilion and booths of various participating states and tour operators, participation was coordinated by Services Export Promotion Council (SEPC).
- During the day, Incredible India organized various Culture Performances, Yoga Sessions, Mehndi and Bollywood Dance Performances.

- Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare organised a one-day exhibition and conference as “India Cold Chain Conclave” in New Delhi.

- Objective: The conference was organised with the objective to bring together all the stakeholders on one common platform where they can contribute thoughts and ideas for the growth of industry in a sustainable manner and to explore ways of reducing post-harvest losses with relevant technologies.
- An exhibition was also organised concurrently to demonstrate Innovations and Excellence in Cold Chain Sector by industry leaders.
- Knowledge Partner: National Centre for Cold Chain Development (NCCD) is involved in organizing the India Cold Chain Conclave 2023 as a knowledge partner.
- Participation: The conclave was attended by over 250 participants/delegates belonging to Various Government Departments, Corporates, Technology Providers, Traders, Exporters, Researchers and other stakeholders from various parts of the country.
- The event was also attended by other senior officers from the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Food Processing Industries, APEDA, Bureau of Energy Efficiency etc.
VAGIR fifth Kalvari Class Submarine

- Indian Navy is set to commission the fifth Kalvari class submarine Vagir on 23 Jan 2023.
- Adm R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff will be the Chief Guest for the ceremony.
VAGIR Submarine
- Background: The erstwhile Vagir was commissioned on 01 Nov 1973 and undertook numerous operational missions including deterrent patrols.
- The submarine was decommissioned on 07 Jan 2001 after serving the nation for about three decades.
- About: Launched and named ‘Vagir’ on 12 Nov 20, the submarine in its new avatar has the distinction of having the lowest build time among all indigenously manufactured submarines till date.
- Significance: Vagir will boost the Indian Navy’s capability to further India’s maritime interests and is capable of undertaking diverse missions including anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying and surveillance missions.
Kalvari Class of Submarines
- These submarines are being built in India by the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) Mumbai, under collaboration with M/s Naval Group, France.
- Four of the Kalvari class of submarines have already been commissioned into the Indian Navy.
