- 14th Edition of the World Spice Congress (WSC) 2023 is to be held in Mumbai from 16-18 February 2023.
Key Details about 14th World Spice Congress (WSC): What is WCS?
- About: 14th World Spice Congress (WSC) is the world’s largest exclusive business platform for the spice sector.
- Organization: World Spice Congress (WSC) organized by Spices Board India (Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Govt. of India) in association with various trade and export forums.
- India’s Objective: India at World Spice Congress 2023 aims to open up newer opportunities to promote international trade of Indian spices.
- Venue: World Spice Congress (WSC) is scheduled to be held at CIDCO Exhibition and Convention Centre, Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra during 16-18 February 2023.
- Participation: Over 1000 delegates from more than 50 countries are expected to participate in the 14th World Spice Congress (WSC)
- 14th World Spice Congress (WSC) theme: The theme chosen for the current edition of WSC is ‘Vision 2030: SPICES’ (Sustainability– Productivity – Innovation – Collaboration- Excellence and Safety)”.
Spices and Spice Trade of India
- India is known as the ‘Spice Bowl’ of the world. It produces a number of quality, rare and medicinal spices.
- A majority of the spice trade in India takes place during the last quarter of the year and the Indian spice industry is looking forward to an increased export of spices during January -March 2023.

M-Sand to be Produced by Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL)
M-Sand in News
- Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), the Miniratna coal-producing company is all set to start production of ‘M-Sand’ using its Over Burden (OB) as raw material.
- Recently NCL has secured consent to operate (CTO) which paves the path towards commercial production and auction of M-Sand which is likely to begin next month.
M-Sand Production by NCL
- The M-Sand initiative is based on promoting sustainable practices under the mentorship of the Ministry of Coal for maximizing the utilization of natural resources and minimizing the adverse impact of mining.
- Eyeing on business diversification while focusing on the ecological balance, the company has set up a Sand manufacturing plant using its Over Burden (OB) as raw material.
- This pro-environment initiative of the company will assist to conserve river bed erosion and preserve aquatic ecosystems.
Significance of M-sand Production
- The ground breaking initiative is a win-win situation for the company, government, and local stakeholders.
- NCL will produce about 3 Lakh Cubic Meters of M-Sand annually and will be using 1429 Cubic Meters Over Burden each day to make 1000 Cubic Meters of sand per day.
- The ‘M-Sand’ produced will be e-auctioned at a much cheaper base price and of superior or par quality compared to presently available sand in the market.

- Recently, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the 26th National Youth Festival in Hubbali, Karnataka on 12th January 2023.
- The National Youth Festival programme is being held on National Youth Day, which is celebrated on the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekanand, to honour and cherish his ideals, teachings and contributions.

- About: The National Youth Festival is held every year to provide exposure to our talented youth at the national level, along with galvanising them towards nation building.
- Significance: It brings diverse cultures from all parts of the country on a common platform and unites the participants in the spirit of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.
- Venue and Timing: This year, the Festival is being held in Hubballi-Dharwad in Karnataka from 12th to 16th January, with the theme being “Viksit Yuva – Viksit Bharat”.
Key Events at National Youth Festival 2023
- The Festival will witness the Youth Summit, which will witness plenary discussions on five themes stemming from G20 and Y20 events viz.
- Future of work, Industry, Innovation and 21st Century Skills;
- Climate change and disaster risk reduction;
- Peace building and Reconciliation;
- Shared future-youth in democracy and governance; and
- Health & Well-being.
- The Summit will witness participation of more than sixty eminent experts. Several competitive and non-competitive events will also be held.
- Competitive events will include folk dances and songs, and will be held to provide an impetus to local traditional cultures.
- Non-competitive events will include Yogathon which aims to mobilise close to 10 lakh people to do Yoga.
- Eight indigenous sports and martial arts will also be presented during the event by national level performers.
- Other attractions include Food Festival, Young Artist Camp, adventure sports activities, special Know Your Army, Navy and Air Force camps, among others.
