SSLV D2 In News?

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on February 10, 2023, successfully launched the second developmental flight of the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV D2) from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.
  • The SSLV D2 successfully put into their intended orbit Earth Observation Satellite EOS-07, Janus-1 and Azaadi SAT-2.

Key Details About SSLV D2

  • Launch Pad: The 34 metre tall SSLV D2 weighing 120 ton took off from the first launch pad of Satish Dhawan Space Centre.
  • Three Staged: The three staged SSLV D2 powered by solid fuel also has a velocity trimming module powered by liquid fuel for precise injection of satellites.
  • Successful Flight: It was a successful flight of SSLV D2 with the precise placement of the satellites in the destined planar orbit.
  • SSLV payload capability
    • Single/Multi Satellites – Nano, Micro and Mini satellites
    • Single Satellite up to 500 kg in 500 km planar orbit
    • Multiple satellites ranging from 10 kg to 300 kg into 500 km Planar Orbit.

Key Details of Satellites Sent Through SSLV D2

  • EOS-07: The EOS-07 is a 156.3 kg satellite designed, developed and realised by ISRO. New experiments include mm-Wave Humidity Sounder and Spectrum Monitoring Payload.
  • Janus-1: Janus-1, a 10.2 kg satellite, belongs to ANTARIS, US. Janus-1 is a technology demonstrator, smart satellite mission, based on Antaris software platform.
  • Azaadi SAT-2: The 8.7 kg satellite Azaadi SAT-2 is a combined effort of about 750 girl students across India guided by Space Kidz India, Chennai. It aims to demonstrate LoRa and Amateur Radio communication satellites, measure radiation levels in space and demonstrate expanding satellite structure.

Operation Dost

Operation Dost In News

  • On February 06, 2023, a devastating earthquake happened in Turkey and Syria. The death toll has crossed 17,000 in both Turkey and Syria and is expected to rise further.
  • As a humanitarian gesture, India launched Operation Dost to extend assistance to Turkey as well as Syria after devastating quakes and aftershocks in the region.

How India Running ‘Operation Dost’?

  • Under ‘Operation Dost’, India is sending a massive amount of humanitarian aid for Turkey and Syria.
  • So far, six planes from India has reached Turkey. These planes carrying rescue personnel, essentials, and medical equipment for earthquake relief efforts.
  • The Indian Government has sent tons of relief material to both Syria and Turkey in collaboration with the Indian Army as part of Operation.
  • Under this, India sent to Turkey relief materials, a mobile hospital, and specialised search and rescue teams.
  • 250 Army personnel have already been deployed in the worst-hit areas of Turkey and Syria.
  • Three self-sustaining teams of the NDRF, numbering more than 150 specially trained personnel, along with Rambo and his friends (of the dog squad), specialised vehicles, and other supplies, have also reached Turkey.

Aljamea-tus-Saifiyah In News?

On February 10, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugerated Aljamea-tus-Saifiyah(an Arabic academy) built for Dawoodi Bohra community.

About Aljamea-tus-Saifiyah

  • Aljamea-tus-Saifiyah also known as Jamea, is an academic institute exclusively catering to the education of young boys and girls from the Dawoodi Bohra community, a Shiite denomination spread across the world.
  • While the academy’s focus will primarily be on spiritual and religious studies, the academy will also provide its students with mainstream education in association with an internationally recognised school board curriculum.

The Jaffna Cultural Center

In News

On February 11 2023, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe will participate in an event marking the dedication of the Jaffna Cultural Centre to the people of Sri Lanka.

Background

The Memorandum of Understanding for the construction of the Jaffna centre was signed on June 9, 2014. Following its construction, the facility was virtually inaugurated during the visit of External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar to Colombo in March 2022.

Who Built?: The Jaffna Cultural Center project was built under an Indian grant, at a cost of 11 million dollars.

About The Building: Located next to the iconic Jaffna Public Library, the Jaffna Cultural Centre will be the tallest building in Jaffna town. The centre comprises a theatre style auditorium with capacity of 600 people, a multimedia library with online research facilities, exhibition and gallery space and a museum.

Concept of Building Design: The design for the Jaffna Cultural Centre (JCC) is based on the twin concepts of “celebrating the old and inspiring the new” & “a civic space for shared experiences of art and culture”.

Benefits: The center will provide suitable social infrastructure for the people of Northern Province, especially those residing in Jaffna, to reconnect themselves with their cultural roots and the rest of the country.

Importance of Jaffna: Jaffna, which is the erstwhile cultural capital of the country holding national and regional importance, suffered many losses during the protracted civil war. However, local artists, academics and cultural activists have kept the flames of Jaffna’s cultural life burning through the last few years.
