Recently, On May 18, 2023, the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) observed the Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD).

Global Accessibility Awareness Day 2023 was celebrated with the vision to build an inclusive society in which equal opportunities are provided for the growth and development of Persons with Disabilities so that they can lead productive, safe and dignified lives.

  • Global Accessibility Awareness Day is Celebrated on the 3rd Thursday of May every year.
  • The purpose of GAAD is to get everyone talking, thinking and learning about digital- web, software, mobile, etc. access/inclusion for people with different disabilities.

Global Accessibility Awareness Day Celebrations by DEPwD

DEPwD, under Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India is the nodal body to look after all the development agenda of Persons with Disabilities of the country.

  • Aligning with GAAD’s purpose and with the aim to make technology accessible and usable by persons with disabilities the Department organizes seminars/webinars on topics like-
    • Accessibility of websites,
    • Social media platforms,
    • Mobile/PC as well as in banking systems,
    • Universal design,
    • Assistive technologies, and
    • Disability representations.
  • Keeping ‘inclusion’ as a central  mandate, the Department with 65 institutes/organisations that are associated with DEPwD conducted events at more than 80 places across India.
  • The celebration and awareness generation of GAAD by the Department is national level celebration that is poised to bring together all relevant stakeholders on a single day across multiple locations of India to share knowledge, experiences, views and ideas, and discuss the latest developments and trends in the field of Digital and technological accessibility.
  • The celebration shall thus further strengthen mutual confidence and interoperability of institutions as per the needs of PwDs and also enable sharing of best practices.

Recently, the 17th meeting of the India-US Defence Policy Group (DPG) was co-chaired by Defence Secretary Shri Giridhar Aramane and US Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Dr Colin Kahl. The 17th meeting of India-US Defence Policy Group (DPG) was held in Washington DC on May 17, 2023.

During the meeting, both sides assessed the advancements in enhancing defence industrial cooperation and implementing the India-US Major Defence Partnership.

  • Key topics of discussion included military-to-military collaboration, the implementation of foundational defence agreements, joint exercises, as well as ongoing and future cooperative endeavors in the Indian Ocean Region.
  • Significant attention was devoted to exploring avenues for bolstering defence industrial cooperation, encompassing technology partnerships, long-term research and development, and enhancing supply chain security.
  • The meeting also entailed discussions on fostering co-development and co-production in India, highlighting potential areas and projects where collaboration between Indian and US defence companies could be pursued.
  • Both parties expressed their commitment to encouraging the participation of private and government stakeholders in leveraging innovation ecosystems and supporting defence start-ups.
