Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of Earth Sciences and Space, revealed to the Rajya Sabha that NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) has been developed through a collaborative effort between the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
NISAR Satellite Details
NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) is an earth science satellite developed by ISRO in collaboration with the NASA.
- Collaboration: As part of the collaborative effort,
- NASA is providing the L-Band SAR payload, a 12-meter unfurlable antenna, and high-precision GPS, and
- ISRO is responsible for delivering the S-band SAR payload and spacecraft bus, and facilitating the launch.
- Funding: The total cost incurred by ISRO in the realization of the NISAR satellite, as of February 2023, is Rs. 469.40 Crore, not including the launch expenditure.
NISAR Satellite Features
The NISAR satellite is equipped with an I-3K bus, and its SAR instrument is designed using the advanced Sweep SAR technique.
- The Advance Sweep SAR technique is configured for both L and S bands and utilizes polarimetric configuration to provide wide swath coverage and high resolution imaging capabilities.
- With a 12-day repeat cycle, the spacecraft will revolve around the Earth in a sun synchronous orbit at an altitude of 747 kilometers and an inclination of 98.4 degrees.
NISAR Satellite Objectives
Mission objectives of the NISAR satellite are-
- Design, Develop and launch Dual Frequency (L and S band) Radar Imaging Satellite and
- To Explore newer applications areas using L & S Band microwave data especially in surface deformation studies, terrestrial biomass structure, natural resource mapping and
- Monitoring and studies related to dynamics of ice-sheets, glaciers, forests, oil slick etc.

Recently, the Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Shri Narendra Singh Tomar, inaugurated the digitized claim settlement module, DigiClaim, of the National Crop Insurance Portal at Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi.
DigiClaim Module under PMFBY
The launch of DigiClaim is part of the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) initiative.
- The introduction of the DigiClaim module will enable electronic disbursement of claims to farmers in six states, thus providing a sustainable financial flow to insured farmers and easing their lives.
- The automated claim settlement process will now be a continual activity aimed at supporting and benefitting farmers.
- The launch of DigiClaim is expected to have a direct impact on the claim reversal ratio, which is likely to decrease.
- One notable aspect of this digital innovation is that farmers will have the ability to track the claim settlement process in real-time through their mobile phones and benefit from the scheme’s features.
DigiClaim Module Significance
To address the issue of delayed disbursement of crop loss claims to insured farmers, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare has launched the DigiClaim Module.
- This initiative aims to prioritize farmers’ welfare and expedite the claim disbursal process by ensuring that valid claims are processed transparently and directly to the farmers’ bank accounts.
- The DigiClaim Module integrates the National Crop Insurance Portal (NCIP) with the Public Finance Management System (PFMS) to enable this technology.
