‘Agni Prime’ Ballistic Missile in News

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted a successful flight test of the ‘Agni Prime’ ballistic missile from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island, located off the coast of Odisha. The ‘Agni Prime’ Ballistic Missile test demonstrated the successful achievement of all the intended objectives.

The Agni-Prime ballistic missile, a new-generation nuclear-capable weapon, was successfully tested by India. The missile was launched from the Abdul Kalam Island, situated off the coast of Odisha. With a striking range between 1,000 and 2,000 kilometers, the test showcased the missile’s capabilities.

  • In a significant milestone, the tri-service Strategic Forces Command (SFC) of India successfully conducted the first pre-induction night launch of the Agni-Prime ballistic missile.
  • The SFC, responsible for managing the nation’s nuclear arsenal, oversaw the operation. A defense ministry official confirmed that the test affirmed the system’s precision and dependability.
  • The Agni-Prime missile is poised to gradually replace the Agni-I (700-km) missiles in the SFC’s arsenal.
  • The Strategic Forces Command currently possesses several other ballistic missiles, including the Prithvi-II (350-km), Agni-II (2,000-km), Agni-III (3,000-km), and Agni-4 (4,000-km).

Recently, the first edition of India, France, and UAE Maritime Partnership Exercise commenced in the Gulf of Oman.

INS Tarkash and French Ship Surcouf both with integral helicopters, French Rafale aircraft and UAE Navy Maritime Patrol Aircraft are participating in the exercise.

  • Scheduled to take place over two days, the maritime exercise will encompass a wide range of naval operations in the Gulf of Oman.
  • These operations will include Surface Warfare, featuring tactical firing and drills for missile engagements against surface targets, as well as Helicopter Cross Deck Landing Operations, Advanced Air Defence Exercises, and Boarding operations.
  • Additionally, the exercise will facilitate the exchange of personnel to share best practices.
  • The primary objective of this inaugural exercise is to strengthen trilateral cooperation among the Indian, French, and UAE navies.

India, France and UAE Maritime Partnership Exercise aims to lay the foundation for collaborative efforts in addressing both traditional and non-traditional threats in the maritime domain. Furthermore, the exercise will bolster cooperation in safeguarding the security of merchant trade and promoting the freedom of navigation in the high seas within the region.

Recently, the Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy, along with the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, engaged in an interactive session with local villagers in Chhitkul, of the Kinnaur district, as part of the Vibrant Villages Programme. At the interaction, the Chief Minister and Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy personally engaged with the local villagers, attentively listening to their concerns and issues. They provided assurances to the community that their legitimate demands would be given utmost priority and earnestly considered.

Vibrant Villages Program Features

The Vibrant Villages scheme aids to identify and develop the economic drivers based on local natural human and other resources of the border villages on northern border and development of growth centres on “Hub and Spoke Model”. This to be done through-

  • Promotion of social entrepreneurship,
  • Empowerment of youth and women through skill development and entrepreneurship,
  • Leveraging the tourism potential through promotion of local cultural, traditional knowledge and heritage and
  • Development of sustainable eco-agribusinesses on the concept of “One village-One product” through community based organisations, Cooperatives, SHGs, NGOs etc.

Vibrant Villages scheme Implementation

Vibrant Village Action Plans will be created by the district administration with the help of Gram Panchayats. 100 % saturation of Central and state schemes will be ensured.

  • Key outcomes that have been attempted are, connectivity with all-weather road, drinking water, 24×7 electricity – Solar and wind energy to be given focused attention, mobile and internet connectivity.
  • Tourist centers, multi-purpose centers and health and wellness Centers.
  • There will not be overlap with Border Area Development Programme.
  • In the first phase of this project, which is three-years-long, 662 villages will be developed. Of them, 455 are in Arunachal Pradesh.
