G20 Disaster Risk Reduction Meeting: The G-20 Council’s Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group meeting provides a platform to showcase this achievement to the global community. G20 Disaster Risk Reduction Meeting is also important for UPSC Prelims Exam 2023 and UPSC Mains Exam (GS Paper 2- International Relations; GS Paper 3- Disaster Management).

Recently, A meeting was held at the BMC headquarters in Mumbai, where the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal reviewed the preparations being made by BMC and other agencies for the upcoming 2nd meeting of the G-20 Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group.

The G-20 Council’s Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group meeting provides a platform to showcase this achievement to the global community. With this in mind, the BMC Commissioner has instructed all relevant agencies, including BMC, to ensure proper coordination and complete any pending work within the designated timeframe.

  • The 2nd G20 Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group meeting is scheduled to take place in Mumbai from May 23rd to 25th.
  • The 2nd G-20 Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group meeting will be attended by over 120 members.
  • As part of the meeting’s activities, representatives of the Working Group will also visit the BMC headquarters.
  • During the visit, they will inspect the control room of the Disaster Management Department and participate in a heritage walk of the historic municipal building.

G20 Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group Meetings

There will be three G20 Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group Meetings held in following locations-

  • 1st Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group Meeting:- Gandhinagar, Gujarat (30 March – 1 April 2023)
  • 2nd Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group Meeting:- Mumbai, Maharashtra (23rd May-25th May 2023)
  • 3rd Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group Meeting:- Chennai, Tamil Nadu (24July-26July 2023)

G20 working group on Disaster Risk Reduction

When India took over the Presidency of the G20 from Indonesia, it established the inaugural G20 working group on Disaster Risk Reduction.

  • The G20 Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group was formed with the aim of promoting collaborative efforts within the G20 Group, conducting interdisciplinary research, and exchanging best practices related to disaster risk reduction.
  • The impact of disasters is not limited to a single country and poses a threat to our shared future.
  • The creation of G20 working group on Disaster Risk Reduction is a clear indication of India’s G20 Presidency’s dedication to the theme of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ – meaning ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future.’

G20 DRR Working Group Priorities & Expected Outcomes

The G20 group of countries is proposed to work towards the following priorities within the overarching framework provided by the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction-

  • Global coverage of Early Warning Systems for all hydro-meteorological disasters.
  • Increased commitment towards making infrastructure systems disaster and climate resilient.
  • Stronger national financial frameworks for disaster risk reduction.
  • Strengthened national and global disaster response system to address the consequences of increasing frequency and intensity of disasters.
  • Increased application of ecosystems-based approaches to disaster risk.
