G20 Education Ministers’ Meet: The G20 Education Ministers’ Meet is a significant gathering of education ministers from the Group of Twenty (G20) nations. The meeting provides a platform for policymakers to discuss and address critical issues related to education, with the aim of advancing global educational systems and promoting inclusive and equitable access to quality education. G20 Education Ministers’ Meet is also important for UPSC Prelims Exam and UPSC Mains Exam (GS Paper 2- International Relations).

Recently, the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi addressed the G20 Education Ministers’ Meet held in Pune via video message. In his G20 Education Ministers’ Meet address, he said that education is not only the foundation upon which our civilization has been built, but it is also the architect of humanity’s future.

  • The Prime Minister referred to the Education Ministers as the Sherpas and said that they are leading mankind in its effort for development, peace, and prosperity for all.
  • Shri Modi highlighted that the Indian scriptures describe the role of education as the key to bringing joy.

G20 Education Ministers’ Meet 2023

Under the chairmanship of Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister for Education and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, the Education Ministers’ meeting took place. This significant gathering brought together 150 delegates from G20 nations, invitee countries, and esteemed international organizations including UNICEF, UNESCO, and OECD.

  • The objective of the meeting was to discuss and address various aspects related to education and skill development on a global scale.
  • The presence of Ministers from G20 nations, invitee countries, and senior officials from renowned international organizations highlighted the importance attached to education and skill development globally.
  • With their collective expertise and experience, the meeting aimed to foster productive discussions, exchange ideas, and share best practices to enhance educational systems worldwide.

G20 Education Working Group Meeting, Theme and Focus Areas

The G20 Education Working Group theme and Focus Areas are discussed below-

Focus Areas: The EdWG focused on the following 4 priority area:

  • Ensuring Foundational Literacy and Numeracy especially in context of blended learning
  • Making Tech-enabled learning more inclusive, qualitative and collaborative at every level
  • Building Capacities, promoting Life-long Learning in the context of Future of Work
  • Strengthening Research, promoting Innovation through richer collaboration and partnerships

Theme: The 4th Meeting of the G20 EdWG with the theme ‘Ensuring Foundational literacy and Numeracy in the context of Blended Learning’ held at Pune culminated into G20 Ministers meeting on 22nd June, 2023.

India’s G20 Presidency 2023

G20 Presidency: India assumed, for the first time, the Group of 20 (G20) year-long presidency from December 1, 2022 to November 30, 2023. India’s G20 Presidency will culminate with the G20 Summit in India in 2023 (G20 2023 Summit).

  • G20 Presidency 2023: India inherited the G20 Presidency for the year 2023 from Indonesia which was the previous G20 Chair.
  • Significance: The G20 Presidency offers a unique opportunity to India to contribute to the global agenda on pressing issues of international importance.
    • During its G20 presidency, India will hold about 200 meetings in 32 different sectors in multiple locations across the country.
  • G20 theme: India’s G20 Presidency Theme is “Vasudhaiva Kutumba-kam” or “One Earth One Family One Future”.
  • G20 Logo: The symbol of the lotus in the G20 logo is a representation of hope in this time. No matter how adverse the circumstances, the lotus still blooms.
    • Shared prosperity that reaches the last person at the last mile. This is why, in the G20 logo, the Earth is placed on a lotus too.
