What Does Gujarat’s Bid For Hosting 2036 Olympics Means?: The Olympic slots are full till 2032, but they are open for bidding from 2036 onwards. So the Government of India will back the Indian Olympic Association’s (IOA) bid for the next available slot and a roadmap for India’s bid would be presented to all the members of the International Olympic Committee during the IOC session scheduled in Mumbai in September 2023.

- Recently, Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level meeting to review the preliminary preparations for Gujarat’s bid for the 2036 Olympics.
- He directed for development of international-level infrastructure at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave coming up near Narendra Modi Stadium for hosting the Games in 2036.
- In December 2022, The Union sports minister Anurag Thakur also said that India will bid to host the Olympics in 2036, and Ahmedabad in Gujarat will likely be the host city because of its world-class sporting infrastructure.

In April 2022, the government of Gujarat had begun engaging with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) with regards to potentially hosting the Summer Olympic Games in 2036, and that committee members were expected to visit the mega sports complex(Ahmedabad) in 2025.

How is the Olympic bidding process Works?
- The actual bid process starts nine years before the Olympics is due to take place.
- Cities who want to host the games have to prove to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) they have the best plan to make the games a success.
- Hosting an Olympics costs a lot of money. The winning city has to show the IOC that they can afford to stage the games, and build the facilities needed for athletes, spectators and officials to compete and stay in during competition time.
- They do this by taking part in a series of presentations and meetings to the IOC spread out over the first two years of the bid process.
- Any city who wants to bid to hold the Olympics and Paralympics can put forward a proposal, but only the best make it through to the later stages.
- For Example, Five cities originally bid to host the 2020 Games, but Doha (Qatar), and Baku (Azerbaijan) weren’t selected to go any further with their bids. Istanbul, Madrid and Tokyo were the three finalists.
- A host city is elected by the majority of votes cast by a secret ballot. Each active member has one vote.
