In News
- Yesterday, PM Modi launched the ‘Hakku Patra’ (land title deed) distribution drive to over 52,000 nomadic Lambani (Banjara) tribes at Malkhed in Kalaburagi district.
- In Recent Past, the BJP Government in Karnataka also declared more than three thousand tanda inhabitations as revenue villages.
- What Is Tanda?: Tanda is a traditional name used for Banjara settlement. Tanda Villages are located in the northern tip of the Karnataka state.

- In 1993, ‘Tanda’ was recommended to be given the status of revenue village.
How Will The Hakku Patra Benefit The Banjara Community?
- Issue: At Malkhed village of Sedam Taluka of Kalaburagi district, the Prime Minister distributed title deeds (hakku patra) to the eligible beneficiaries of these newly declared revenue villages.
- Vision And Beneficiaries: In line with the Prime Minister’s vision of 100 percent saturation of government schemes, about 1475 unrecorded habitations have been declared as New Revenue villages in five districts of Karnataka(Kalaburagi, Yadgiri, Raichur, Bidar and Vijayapura).
- Recognition For Nomads: The issuance of Hakku Patra(title deeds) to more than fifty thousand beneficiaries, who are largely from the marginalised and vulnerable communities from the SC, ST and OBC, is a step to provide formal recognition from the government for their land and will make them eligible for receiving government services like drinking water, electricity, roads etc.
- Benefits For Nomads: The move to distribute these deeds would benefit 52,072 nomads in five districts of north Karnataka, providing them a “permanent roof”.

The Banjara Community Is Residing In Which Region Of Karnataka?
- The districts that were under the erstwhile rule of Nizams of Hyderabad are among the backward regions of the State.
- This reason is a part of ‘Kalyana Karnataka’ or the Hyderabad Karnataka region as it was earlier known.
- The region, comprising Bidar, Ballari, Vijayanagara, Kalaburagi, Koppal, Raichur, and Yadgir, enjoys special status under the Constitution (Article 371J) owing to its backwardness.

- Lambanis, also called Lambadis or Banjaras, were nomadic tribes who found in Rajasthan, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra.
