Paper I: English and English Essay

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate a candidate’s ability to read and understand significant discursive texts and to communicate their thoughts clearly and accurately in English. The pattern of questions will generally include:

  • History of Modern India and Indian Culture – The History of Modern India includes questions on important personalities who shaped the direction of the freedom movement and social reforms. The part relating to Indian Culture‘ will cover all aspects of Indian culture from ancient to modern times.
  • Geography of India – In this part, questions will be on the physical, economic, and social geography of India.
  • Indian Polity – Questions on the Constitution of India, the Political system, and related matters.
  • Current National Issues and Topics of Social Relevance – This section is designed to assess candidates’ awareness of current national issues and socially relevant topics in India.   • Indian Economy – Questions will be on the planning and economic development in India, economic and trade issues foreign trade, the role and functions of I.M.F. World Bank, W.T.O., etc.
  • International Affairs and Institutions – This part will include questions on important events in world affairs and on international institutions.
  • Developments in the field of science and technology, communications, and space – In this part, questions will test the candidate’s awareness of the developments in the field of science and technology.

HPSC HCS Exam Pattern 2025

The HPSC HCS Exam 2025 has two stages. The first stage is the Preliminary Exam, with objective questions on General Studies (including Haryana-specific topics) and the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). Both papers are qualifying. Candidates who pass the Prelims move on to the Mains Exam, which includes five descriptive papers: English, Hindi, General Studies, and two optional subjects.

The Prelims exam is the first phase of the Haryana Civil Service selection process. It consists of two papers: General Studies and CSAT, each worth 100 marks.
