It is an annual chariot festival that commemorates the journey of Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra, from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple. On the auspicious occasion of Rath Yatra, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi extends his heartfelt greetings to all. In addition, he has shared a video emphasizing the significance of Rath Yatra in the rich tapestry of Indian culture.
The Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra is a significant yearly celebration that takes place in the town of Puri in Odisha. It is a traditional chariot festival that is dedicated to Lord Jagannath.
The Rath Yatra is unique for its three Hindu gods who are brought out of their temples in a colourful procession to meet their devotees.
Documented in Hindu sacred texts – Brahma Purana, Padma Purana, Skanda Purana and Kapila Samhita – it is believed that Subhadra, sister of Lord Jagannath, desired to travel to Puri.
The Jagannath Yatra is the only festival whose rituals allow Hindu deities to travel from the Jagannath Temple to Gundicha Temple, where they stay for a couple of days. Chariots are pulled by devotees and it is believed that touching the rope of Lord Jagannath’s chariot will cleanse all the sins committed, knowingly or unknowingly.
The Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra is a vibrant celebration of devotion, spirituality, and cultural heritage. It serves as a powerful reminder of the deep-rooted traditions and values that unite people in their quest for divine blessings. As the chariots roll through the streets of Puri, carrying the deities, the air is filled with fervor and the joyous chants of devotees. The Rath Yatra not only enriches the spiritual lives of the devotees but also stands as a testament to the cultural vibrancy and religious harmony of India.
