Lakshya Zero Dumpsite- Relevance for UPSC Exam

Why Lakshya Zero Dumpsite in News?

  • Recently, the Government of India approved ₹250 crores for Legacy Waste Remediation in Rajasthan.
    • The pink city of Jaipur, which is the capital city of Rajasthan and holds the maximum amount of legacy waste in the State.
  • Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) approved worth ₹250.15 crores for Rajasthan for remediation of more than 45.5 lakh MT of legacy waste present across 24 cities.
  • The remediation of legacy waste will take the State closer to its envisioned dream of becoming Garbage Free and will also facilitate the State to achieve ‘Lakshya Zero Dumpsite’.

 

What is Lakshya Zero Dumpsite?

  • About: ‘Lakshya Zero’ Dumpsite is one of the objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 (SBM-U 2.0) for ensuring ‘Garbage Free Cities’.
    • ‘Lakshya Zero’ Dumpsite initiative was launched by the Prime Minister on 1st October, 2021.
  • Implementing Ministry: Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs is responsible with the help of the concerned state is responsible for implementing the Lakshya Zero Dumpsite, under SBM 2.0.
  • Objective: ‘Lakshya Zero’ Dumpsite Under SBM 2.0 aims to achieve sustainable sanitation and scientific waste processing for ‘Garbage Free Cities’.
    • ‘Lakshya Zero’ Dumpsite aims to process 16 crore metric tonnes (MT) of legacy waste dumpsites, occupying nearly 15,000 acres of city land.

Key Points about Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0

  • About: Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 was launched along with Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0 on 1st October 2021 by the Prime Minister of India.
  • Mandate: Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 aims to achieve sustainable sanitation and scientific waste processing for ‘Garbage Free Cities’.
  • Budgetary Allocation: The budgetary allotment for SBM-U 2.0 for the State is ₹1,765.80 crore, which is 2.5 times more than the allocation of Rs. ₹705.46 crore in SBM-U from 2014-19.
  • Key Priorities of SBM (U) 2.0: Key focus areas of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 are listed below-
    • Phasing out single use plastics,
    • Ensuring of the scientific processing of construction & demolition waste, and
    • Establishing Waste to Compost, Waste to Energy, as well as Material Recovery Facilities.
