What is Lateral Entry in UPSC?

UPSC lateral Entry Eligibility

On August 17, UPSC issued a notification for lateral entry into senior positions in the Government of India (Joint Secretary and Director/Deputy Secretary level officers). The eligibility criteria for UPSC lateral entry are as follows:

A postgraduate degree in Technology, Management, Public Policy, Development Studies, Economics, Liberal Arts, or Law from any university or institution.

Additionally, 15 years of work experience in the technical field is required.

UPSC lateral Entry age limit

The age limit for UPSC lateral entry positions typically ranges from 40 to 55 years, though this can vary depending on the specific role and requirements outlined in the recruitment notification. Candidates must fall within this age bracket to be considered eligible. For positions filled through UPSC lateral entry, the age limits have been specified by UPSC as follows:

• For the position of Joint Secretary: Minimum age 40 years and maximum age 55 years.
• For the position of Director: Minimum age 35 years and maximum age 45 years.
• For the position of Deputy Secretary: Minimum age 32 years and maximum age 40 years.

How to apply for lateral entry in UPSC?

If any candidates, who are interested in applying for lateral entry into UPSC civil services, the process typically begins with the government releasing specific notifications or advertisements for these positions on official platforms like the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) website or through the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

• Visit the official Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) web portal.
• You will find the link for the one-time registration on the homepage.
• Complete the OTR process.
• Fill out the entire application form.
• Attach the necessary documents to it and submit them.
• Complete the registration/ application fee payment.
• Save a copy of the application form for further proceedings.

Applications received through any other mode would not be accepted and summarily rejected.

Candidates must upload the documents or certificates in support of in each of the claims made by them in the application like, Date of Birth, Educational Qualification, Experience, Desirable Qualification(s) etc. or any other information, separately against each claim in a PDF file in such a way that the file size does not exceed 1 MB for the respective aforesaid modules and 2 MB for the “UPLOAD OTHER DOCUMENT” module and is legible when a printout taken.

For that purpose, the applicant may scan the documents/certificates in 200 dpi grey scale.

On the basis of the Online Application Forms submitted by the candidates, in the year 2020 the UPSC shortlisted 231 candidates for the interviews. The interviews were conducted from 27th September to 8th October 2021 and 31 candidates have been recommended as per the enclosed list.
