Constitutional Amendment Acts

  • Indian Constitution leaves scope for amending the Constitution in order to make sure that it stays relevant to the changing times. This is why sometimes the Indian Constitution is also called as the ‘Living Document’.
  • Article 268 in Part XX of the Constitution: It deals with the powers of the Indian Parliament to amend the Constitution and its procedure.
    • It states that the Parliament may amend the Constitution by way of addition, variation or repeals any provision in accordance with the procedure laid down for the purpose.

11. 17th Constitutional Amendment Act, 1964
  • Prohibited the acquisition of land under personal cultivation unless the market value of the land is paid as compensation.
  • Inclusion of 44 more Acts in the Ninth Schedule of the constitution
12. 18th Constitutional Amendment Act, 1966
  • Provided clarification that the power of Parliament to form a new state also includes a power to form a new state or union territory by uniting a part of a state or a union territory to another state or union territory.
  • It created new states namely, Punjab and Haryana.
13. 19th Constitutional Amendment Act, 1966
  • Abolition of System of Election Tribunals and transfer of powers to High Courts to hear the election petitions.
14. 21st Constitutional Amendment Act, 1967
  • 8th Schedule of Indian Constitution was amended to include Sindhi language.
15. 24th Constitutional Amendment Act, 1971
  • Amended Article 13 and 368 for reaffirming the power of Parliament to amend any part of the Constitution including fundamental rights.
    • It was done in response to the Golaknath ruling (1967) of the Supreme Court.
  • The President’s assent to Constitutional Amendment Bill was made compulsory.
16. 25th Constitutional Amendment Act, 1971
  • Curtailed the fundamental right to property.
17. 26th Constitutional Amendment Act, 1971
  • Abolished the Privy Purse and privileges of former rulers of princely states.
18. 31st Constitutional Amendment Act, 1973
  • Increased Lok Sabha seats from 525 to 545.
19. 33rd Constitutional Amendment Act, 1974
  • Articles 101 and 190 of the constitution were amended which provided that the resignation of the MPs and MLAs may be accepted by the Speaker/Chairman only if he is satisfied that the resignation is voluntary or genuine.
20. 35th Constitutional Amendment Act, 1974
  • Sikkim was given the status of ‘Associate State’ of India after terminating its status as a protectorate state.
