Context Of Sangeet Natak Akademi Award

In News

• On February 23, 2023, Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship (Ratna) & Award (Puraskar) For 2019, 2020 And 2021 were presented by President Murmu in New Delhi.
• In Total, eight eminent personalities were given Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowships in the field of performing arts and a total of 128 artists from the field of music, dance, theatre, traditional, folk, and puppetry were given the Akademi Awards.

Prize 

• The Akademi’s fellowship (Akademi Ratna) carries a purse money of Rs. 3,00,000/- (Rupees Three Lakhs only) and Akademi Awards (Akademi Puraskar) carry a purse money of Rs. 1,00,000 (Rupees One Lakh only). The award also carries a Tamrapatra and Angavastram.

Background

• The General Council of Sangeet Natak Akademi, the National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama, New Delhi, at its meeting held from 6-8 November 2022 at New Delhi unanimously elected Ten (10) eminent personalities in the field of performing arts as Akademi Fellows.
• The General Council also selected one hundred and twenty-eight (128) artists from the field of Music, Dance, Theatre, Traditional/Folk/Tribal Music/Dance/Theatre, Puppetry and Overall contribution/scholarship in the Performing Arts for the Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards (Akademi Puraskar) for the years 2019, 2020 & 2021. These one hundred and twenty eight (128) artists include three joint awards.

About Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards

One of the important activities of the Sangeet Natak Akademi has been to give recognition and honours to artists as it would help setting standards in these arts and restore the art and artists to their rightful place in independent India.

History Of Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards

• The institution of Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards is now nearly seventy years old.
• The Awards in Hindustani and Carnatic music were instituted as early as in 1951, even before the Akademi was set up and these were known as Presidential Awards.
• With the formation of the Akademi the Awards came to be known as Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards and the investiture became the responsibility of the Akademi.
• The Presidential Awards for 1952 and 1953 were subsequently incorporated in the list of Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards.

What Does Sangeet Natak Akademi Honour Symbolze?

The Sangeet Natak Akademi honours – Akademi Ratna and Akademi Puraskar not only symbolize the highest standard of excellence and achievements on a national basis in the field of the performing arts but also recognize the sustained individual work of the highest professional order and contribution to the practice and appreciation of these arts through teaching and scholarship.

Categories Covered Under Sangeet Natak Academy Awards?

The eminent artists cover the entire gamut of the performing arts:

• Indian Classical Vocal music: Both Hindustani and Carnatic
• Indian Classical Instrumental music: Both Hindustani and Carnatic including Flute, Sitar and Mridangam
• Sugam Sangeet as well as Harikatha
• Classical Dance: The major forms of Indian dance such as Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kathakali, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Sattriya, Mohiniattam as well as Contemporary Dance

About Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship (Ratna) & Award (Puraskar)

Natak Akademi Fellowship

• The Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship is the highest honour conferred by Sangeet Natak Akademi without distinction of nationality, race, caste, religion, creed, or sex.
• The Fellowship of the Akademi is a most prestigious and rare honour, which is restricted to 40 at any given time.
• The criteria restricts any person below the age of 50 to ordinarily be considered for the honour.
• The recommendations are received from the current fellows along with the members of the General Council of the Akademi.
• The Akademi Fellowship carries purse money of Rs. 3.00 lakhs, a Tamrapatra and an Angavastram.

The Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards 

• As regards the Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards, the number of awards to be conferred annually is 41 at present and, till date, over 1298 artists have been honoured.
• The Akademi Awards carries purse money of Rs. 1.00 lakh, a Tamrapatra and an Angavastram.

About Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar

• Sangeet Natak Akademi has decided to institute “Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar” from the year 2006 to be awarded to artists who have shown / demonstrated conspicuous talent in the fields of music, dance and drama.
• Young outstanding practitioners upto the age of 40 years are eligible to be considered for Yuva Puraskar every year.
• Age as on the date of nomination received is reckoned from 1st April of that year.
• Yuva Puraskar is given annually and the total number of Yuva Puraskar in a year shall not exceed 33.
• The Yuva Puraskar may be given in the following five Fields of activity:
  • Music
  • Dance
  • Theatre
  • Other Traditional / Folk/ Tribal/ Dance/ Music/ Theatre and Puppetry
  • Contribution / Scholarship in Performing Arts
