Top Export Hotspots in India

In terms of value, Jamnagar district in Gujarat has emerged as the leading district for exports in India, contributing approximately 24% to the country’s total exports until January of FY23.

  • On the other hand, Surat district in Gujarat and Mumbai Suburban district in Maharashtra come in second and third places, respectively, with a much lower contribution of around 4.5% to India’s exports during the same period.
  • The remaining districts in the top 10 include Dakshina Kannada (Karnataka), Devbhumi Dwarka, Bharuch, and Kachchh (Gujarat), Mumbai (Maharashtra), Kancheepuram (Tamil Nadu), and Gautam Buddha Nagar (Uttar Pradesh).

State-wise Export Hotspots in India

Among all districts in Tamil Nadu, Kancheepuram had the highest share of exports, accounting for about 33% of the state’s total exports.

  • In comparison, some of the top exporting districts in other states, such as Indore in Madhya Pradesh and Jaipur in Rajasthan, constituted only about 21% of their respective state’s total exports.
  • In contrast, most of the top exporting districts in the north-eastern states contributed as much as 90% of their state’s total exports.
    • For instance, Gomati in Tripura, Ri Bhoi in Meghalaya, and East Sikkim in Sikkim accounted for more than 90% of their state’s exports.
  • In certain other districts, such as Dakshina Kannada, Gautam Buddha Nagar, and Ernakulam, the contribution to their respective state’s exports was in the range of 40-50%.

Product-wise Exports Data of Exports Hub

The reason behind Jamnagar’s supremacy in exports is mainly due to the significant contribution of petroleum exports to India. On the other hand, Kancheepuram’s top exported commodity was smartphones.

  • The top exporting district in Assam, Kamrup, exported tea as its primary commodity, while Gautam Buddha Nagar in Uttar Pradesh primarily exported smartphones.
  • Similarly, Raipur in Chhattisgarh exported parboiled rice, and Mumbai Suburban in Maharashtra exported diamonds as their primary commodity.
  • In export of Petroleum Products, Jamnagar at first position is followed by Dakshina Kannada and Begusarai. Jamnagar’s petroleum products export formed 67% of India’s total exports for that commodity.
  • In export of precious stones and jewellery, Surat, Mumbai, Mumbai Suburban, Jaipur and Kolkata are the top five exporting districts in India. Surat’s precious stones and jewellery exports formed 36% of India’s total exports for that commodity.
  • In terms of exporting districts of rice, wheat and other cereals, Karnal leads the list, followed by Raipur and East Godavari.
  • In export of smartphones and electronic parts, Gautam Buddha Nagar is followed by Kancheepuram, Kolar, Bengaluru Rural, and Kachchh. Gautam Buddha Nagar’s smartphone exports formed 26% of India’s exports.
  • Top five exporting districts of pharmaceutical products are Medchal Malkajgiri, Ahmedabad, Ranga Reddy, Solan and Visakhapatnam.
