National Industrial Corridor Development Programme

National Industrial Corridor Development Program (NICDP): The National Industrial Corridor Development Program aims to establish a network of industrial corridors that will serve as engines of economic growth, promote industrialization, and create employment opportunities across India. National Industrial Corridor Development Program (NICDP) is also important for UPSC Prelims Exam and UPSC Mains Exam (GS Paper 3- Various government schemes for development of Infrastructure in India).

Recently, Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman chaired the 2nd meeting of the Apex Monitoring Authority of National Industrial Corridor Development and Implementation Trust (NICDIT).

  • She also stated that the “FIRE Corridors = F – Freight; I – Industrial; R – Railways; E – Expressways” will ignite industrialization & economic development in India.
  • Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution & Textiles, Shri Piyush Goyal and Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways & Ministry of Ayush, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal also attended the meeting.

Apex Monitoring Authority of NICDIT

The Apex Monitoring Authority of National Industrial Corridor Development and Implementation Trust (NICDIT) is constituted to review the activities of NICDIT.

  • The Apex Monitoring Authority of NICDIT comprises of-
    • Finance Minister as Chairperson,
    • Minister-in- charge, Ministry of Commerce & Industry,
    • Minister of Railways,
    • Minister of Road Transport & Highways,
    • Minister of Shipping,
    • Vice Chairman, NITI Aayog, and
    • Chief Minister(s) of States concerned.
  • Chief Ministers from four states, viz. Gujarat, Haryana, Uttarakhand, and Maharashtra; Ministers from 9 States viz. Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Punjab, Jharkhand, Karnataka, and Rajasthan besides senior officials from all the states attended the meeting.

The meeting proved to be a valuable platform for key stakeholders to discuss and exchange ideas on the progress, challenges, and future strategies related to the National Industrial Corridor Development Program.

  • It presented an opportunity to align efforts, foster collaboration, and accelerate the development of industrial infrastructure across the country.
  • Further steps to be taken into consideration for the advancement of the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme were the main points of discussion during the meeting of Apex Authority.

What is NICDP?

National Industrial Corridor Development Programme is India’s most ambitious infrastructure programme aiming to develop futuristic industrial cities in India which can compete with the best manufacturing and investment destinations in the world.

  • NICDP is an endeavour of Union Government along with States/ UTs to foster innovation, facilitates investment, enhance skill development, and build new world class infrastructure and upscale existing industrial ecosystem.
  • National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (NICDC) is implementing holistic & coordinated development of these Industrial Corridors across the country.
  • NICDP will create employment opportunities and economic growth leading to overall socio-economic development.
  • In 2021, Asian Development Bank (ADB) had approved a $250 million loan to support the National Industrial Corridor Development Program (NICDP).

NICDC Projects

There are 32 projects in 4 phases under the following 11 Industrial Corridors that forms part of National Infrastructure Pipeline

  • Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC)
  • Amritsar-Kolkata Industrial Corridor (AKIC)
  • Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (CBIC)
  • Vizag-Chennai Industrial Corridor (VCIC)
  • Bengaluru-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (BMIC)
  • Odisha Economic Corridor (OEC)
  • Hyderabad Nagpur Industrial Corridor (HNIC)
  • Hyderabad Warangal Industrial Corridor (HWIC)
  • Hyderabad Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (HBIC)
  • Extension of CBIC to Kochi via Coimbatore
  • Delhi Nagpur Industrial Corridor (DNIC)

PM Gati Shakti meaning

Gati Shakti is a digital platform that will bring 16 Ministries—including Railways and Roadways—together for integrated planning and coordinated implementation of infrastructure connectivity projects.

  • It will incorporate the infrastructure schemes of various Ministries and State Governments like Bharatmala, Sagarmala, inland waterways, dry/land ports, UDAN etc.
  • Economic Zones like textile clusters, pharmaceutical clusters, defence corridors, electronic parks, industrial corridors, fishing clusters, agri zones will be covered to improve connectivity & make Indian businesses more competitive.
  • It will also leverage technology extensively including spatial planning tools with ISRO imagery developed by BiSAG-N (Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Applications and Geoinformatics).
