National Monuments Authority (NMA): It is an important organization under Ministry of Culture, Government of India. National Monuments Authority (NMA) is important part of UPSC Mains GS Paper 1 (Indian culture will cover the salient aspects of Art Forms, Literature and Architecture from ancient to modern times).

 

National Monuments Authority (NMA) in News

  • National Monuments Authority is observing the great warrior Baba Banda Singh Bahadur’s martyrdom on 25thJune, 2022. (according to Indian Calendar).
  • This is perhaps the first time that the republic of India is saluting the Valour and sacrifice of the great martyr.

 

About Baba Banda Singh Bahadur

  • About: Baba Banda Singh Bahadur was a great Sikh warrior and a commander of Khalsa army who defeated the Mughals and freed a large part of North India.
    • He established the Khalsa rule in Punjab.
  • Reforms: Banda Singh Bahadur abolished the Zamindari system, and granted property rights to the tillers of the land.
    • He was a Noble ruler who introduced the Nanak Shahi coins.
  • Death: He was captured by Mughal ruler Farrukhsiyar and brought to Delhi and put to death in a most inhuman manner.
    • This martyrdom took place in Mehrauli where a monument still stands in memory of his martyrdom which is an icon of exemplary courage, bravery and deep-rooted faith in dharma.
  • Belief: He was a great and true disciple of Guru Govind Singh Ji Sahib.

National Monuments Authority (NMA)

  • About: National Monuments Authority (NMA) was established in 2010 under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
  • Headquarters: National Monuments Authority (NMA) headquarters is situated in New Delhi.
  • Parent Legislation: National Monuments Authority (NMA) has been set up as per provisions of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains AMASR (Amendment and Validation) Act, 2010.
  • Parent Ministry: NMA functions under the Union Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
  • Composition: The AMASR Act provides for NMA to be constituted with a Chairperson and up to 5 Whole Time and 5 Part Time Members each and a Member Secretary.
    • Director-General of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is an ex officio Member of National Monuments Authority (NMA).
  • Key Functions: Several functions have been assigned to the NMA for the protection and preservation of monuments and sites through management of the prohibited and regulated areas around the centrally protected monuments.
    • One amongst these responsibilities of NMA is also to consider grant of permissions to applicants for construction-related activity in the prohibited and regulated area.
