National Water Development Agency (NWDA)- Key Points

  • About: National Water Development Agency (NWDA) was set to carry out detailed studies, surveys and investigations in respect of the Peninsular Component under the National Perspective Plan (NPP) for Water Resources Development.
  • Establishment: National Water Development Agency (NWDA) was set up as an autonomous society in 1982 under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.
  • Parent Ministry: The National Water Development Agency (NWDA) is a Registered Society under the Department of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation (DoWR, RD&GR)], Ministry of Jal Shakti.
  • Governing Body: National Water Development Agency has a governing body that meets regularly and discusses various issues on the Field.
    • Meeting of Governing Body of National Water Development Agency (NWDA) is chaired by Secretary, DoWR, RD&GR, Ministry of Jal Shakti.

National Water Development Agency (NWDA)- Key Functions

  • National Water Development Agency (NWDA) aims to carry out detailed surveys and investigations of possible reservoir sites and interconnecting links.
    • This is done to establish the feasibility of the proposal of Peninsular Rivers Development and Himalayan Rivers Development Components forming part of the National Perspective for Water Resources Development and Central Water Commission.
  • National Water Development Agency (NWDA) works towards carrying out detailed studies about the quantum of water in various Peninsular River systems and Himalayan River systems.
    • Extra water can be transferred to other basins/States after meeting the reasonable needs of the basin/States in the foreseeable future.
  • NWDA also carries out surveys & investigations work and prepare DPRs of river link proposals under the NPP for Water Resources Development.
  • NWDA prepares Pre-Feasibility Reports (PFRs)/Feasibility Reports (FRs)/DPRs of the Intra-State links as may be proposed by the States.
  • NWDA undertake/construct/repair/renovate/rehabilitate/implement the projects either of its own or through an appointed Agency/Organization/PSU or Company and the projects.
  • NWDA does all such other things the Society may consider necessary, incidental, supplementary, or conducive to the attainment of the above objectives.
