- What Happened?
- On February 06, 2023, a devastating earthquake happened in Turkey and Syria. The death toll has crossed 17,000 in both Turkey and Syria and is expected to rise further.
- How India Responded?
- India launched Operation Dost to extend assistance to Turkey as well as Syria after devastating quakes and aftershocks in the region.
- So far, six planes from India has reached Turkey. These planes carrying rescue personnel, essentials, and medical equipment for earthquake relief efforts.
What Is Operation Dost?
Turkey and Syria witnessed the deadliest earthquakes in over a decade. In Response, India has launched Operation Dost to help those in need in earthquake hit countries.
- Under ‘Operation Dost’, India is sending a massive amount of humanitarian aid for Turkey and Syria.
- The Indian Government has sent tons of relief material to both Syria and Turkey in collaboration with the Indian Army as part of Operation.
- Under this, India sent to Turkey relief materials, a mobile hospital, and specialised search and rescue teams.
250 Army personnel have already been deployed in the worst-hit areas of Turkey and Syria. - Three self-sustaining teams of the NDRF, numbering more than 150 specially trained personnel, along with Rambo and his friends (of the dog squad), specialised vehicles, and other supplies, have also reached Turkey.
- Specialised equipment and other relief materials weighing over 135 tonnes have also reached Turkey.
- India has sent emergency medicines and equipment including portable ECG machines, patient monitors, and other essential medical items to Syria.
- The NDRF teams are rendering assistance in rescue operations at Gaziantep while the medical team is setting up the field hospital in Iskenderun,
- The army field hospital in Iskenderun, Hatay, Türkiye has started functioning with running Medical, Surgical & Emergency Wards; X-Ray Lab & Medical Store.
- When asked about sending aid to Syria when the country has been under US sanction, the government said India is following the G-20 mantra of “One Earth, One Family, One Future.”
Other Humanitarian Relief Operations By India
USA : An Indian Air Force aircraft delivered 25 tonnes of relief supplies for the Hurricane Katrina victims in USA.
Maldives : Under “Operation Castor”, 4 aircraft and 2 Naval ships were engaged in relief operations, after the 2004 Tsunami.
Sri Lanka : India sent its forces to carry out rescue operations, called “Operation Rainbow”, in Sri Lanka hours after the 2004 Tsunami.
Myanmar : When cyclone Nargis hit Myanmar in 2008, India sent relief material and among the first countries to send aid.
Japan : India sent 46 members of NDRF for rescue operations, after 2011 Tsunami, apart from providing relief materials.
Nepal : In the aftermath of the 2015 earthquakes, the NDRF under ”Operation Maitri” deployed 16 rescue teams and sent tonnes of relief materials to Nepal.

Operation Dost is India’s latest expression of being a first responder, a net security provider, and a country whose Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief response is quick and available to countries not only in the neighbouring region, but also beyond.
