• The 7th India Water Impact Summit (IWIS 2022) is being organized from 15th to 17th December, 2022 at Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi by National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) and Center for Ganga River Basin Management and Studies (cGanga).
• This summit is being held to impart impetus towards developing water and environmental infrastructure to protect rivers and water bodies in India.

The theme of the 7th India Water Impact Summit (IWIS 2022) is ‘Restoration and Conservation of Small Rivers in a Large Basin’ with emphasis on the select aspects of ‘Mapping and Convergence of 5Ps’ – People, Policy, Plan, Programme and Project.

• In this three-day summit, experts from the country and abroad will discuss ways in which small rivers facing near-extinction in large river basins can be protected.
• The Summit aims to give an insight into the potential causes for divergence and formulate strategy to achieve convergence.
• Like the previous editions of IWIS, the event will host a finance forum to bring together global financial institutions and investors interested in river restoration and conservation programmes.

What is ‘SAFAR’?

Why ‘SAFAR’ in news?

• Experts have warned that Mumbai is likely to experience an increasing number of days with ‘poor’ and ‘very poor’ air quality in the coming years during winter months.
• The Air Quality Index (AQI) data for Mumbai from November 1 to December 10, 2022, recorded using the System of Air Quality Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) also showing alarming trends.

What is SAFAR?

• Under the plan scheme “Metropolitan Advisories for Cities for Sports, Tourism (Metropolitan Air Quality and Weather Services), Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Govt. of India, has introduced a major national initiative, “System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research” known as “SAFAR“.
• SAFAR provide location specific information on air quality in near real time and its forecast 1-3 days in advance for the first time in India.
• It has been combined with the early warning system on weather parameters.
• The SAFAR system is developed by Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune, along with ESSO partner institutions namely India Meteorological Department (IMD) and National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF).
• The ultimate objective of the project is to increase awareness among general public regarding the air quality in their city well in advance so that appropriate mitigation measures and systematic action can be taken up for betterment of air quality and related health issues.

What is AQI?

• The AQI is an index for reporting daily air quality.
• It focuses on health effects one might experience within a few hours or days after breathing polluted air.
• AQI is calculated for eight major air pollutants: Ground-level ozone, PM10, PM2.5, Carbon monoxide, Sulfur dioxide, Nitrogen dioxide, Ammonia, Lead.
• Ground-level ozone and airborne particles are the two pollutants that pose the greatest threat to human health in India.

• Urus are purely made of premium wood without using any modern techniques.
