- Recently, The Indian Army has placed an order to buy 5 indigenous Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile Weapon Systems (QRSAM).
- QRSAM is one of the most advanced weapon systems in the world
- The QRSAM weapon system includes a Regiment Command Post Vehicle (RCPV), which will completely control the system.
- Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) will supply all five weapon systems to the Indian Army by 2024.

Background Of QRSAM
- DRDO’s project to develop this QRSAM Missile was approved in July, 2014 with a budget of Rs 476.43 crore.
- The QRSAM missile system has been developed by DRDO in collaboration with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Bharat Dynamics Limited. Elements of this weapon system have been supplied through defense related public sector undertakings BEL, BDL and private industry L&T.
- In September 2022, DRDO and the Indian Army have conducted six rounds of flight tests of the indigenously developed QRSAM weapon system from a canister mounted on an all-weather rotatable truck-based launch platform.
- DRDO also displayed a model of the QRSAM system at the 108th Indian Science Congress in Nagpur from January 3 to 7.

What Is QRSAM?
- The QRSAM is an all-weather, air-defence system that provides mobile air defence cover to mechanized assets of the Indian Army in the tactical battle area.
- The unique feature of the QRSAM weapon system is that it can acquire its target on the move with fire at short halts. This has also been proved during the mobility tests carried out earlier.
- Its full form is Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile Weapon System. This includes missiles with indigenous Radio Frequency (RF) seeker, mobile launcher, automated command and control system, surveillance and multi-role radar.

How RCPV works?
- According to BEL one RCPV is connected to three battery units.
- A battery unit consists of a battery command post vehicle and a battery surveillance radar vehicle.
- In addition one battery unit is attached to four combat groups (CG).
- A CG consists of a multifunctional radar unit, which can engage up to 10 targets simultaneously.
- A Multi Launch Rocket Vehicle is armed with six QRSAM rockets.
- A QRSAM weapon system consists of 72 QRSAM rockets.
- While it also has a logistic vehicle to carry the rocket from the system.

Specialty Of QRSAM
- What QRSAM Includes?: The QRSAM includes missiles with indigenous Radio Frequency (RF) seeker, mobile launcher, automated command and control system, surveillance and multi-role radar.
- Target Tracking Capability: The unique feature of the Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile Weapon System(QRSAM) is that it can acquire its target on the move with fire at short halts. This has also been proved during the mobility tests carried out earlier.
- Day & Night Capability: Army and Air Force have tested and evaluated this weapon system in day and night during user trials.
- Fully Automated: The QRSAM missile system comprises a fully automated command and control system, active array battery surveillance radar, active array battery multi-function radar and launcher.
- All Weather Capable: Both the radars have search-on-move and track-on-move capability with 360-degree coverage. It can be used in all weather and has a range of 30 kms.
