The 74th Republic Day celebrations were held at the renovated Kartavya Path, formerly Rajpath, in Delhi. The 74th Republic Day Parade was the first with President Droupadi Murmu at the helm.

As the National Flag was unfurled and the 21-gun salute was presented for the first time by Indian-made 105-mm field guns, replacing the seven vintage Quick Fire 25-pounder guns used since Independence.

  • The change was in line with the Union government’s push for the indigenous manufacture of defence equipment.
  • The Army showcased more Made-in-India equipment, including its main battle tank, Arjun, the NAG missile system, the K-9 Vajra-T gun system, the Akash air defence system, and the BrahMos missile.

Cultural Events in Republic Day 2023

A total of 23 tableaux – 17 from states and Union territories and six from various ministries and departments were showcased at the Republic Day 2023 celebrations.

  • These cultural events depicted India’s vibrant cultural heritage, and economic and social progress were part of the parade on the Kartavya Path.
  • Vande Bharatam- the Nritya Utsav showcase- led by the Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Defence witnessed a cultural performance from artistes from across India.

Women at Republic Day 2023

Lt Commander Disha Amrith, a woman naval air operations official, led the Indian Navy’s contingent of 144 young sailors and its tableau showcased the ‘Nari Shakti’ in force.

  • In a first, women personnel were a part of the Border Security Force camel contingent at parade.
  • An all-women contingent from CRPF, ‘Peacekeepers of the Nation’, participated in the parade. The Force has the distinction of raising the first-ever women-armed police battalion in the world.
