The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) on February 15, 2023, approved the Shinku La tunnel for Ladakh area which will provide all-weather connectivity to the Ladakh region with the entire country.

Location Of Shinku La tunnel

• By 2025, a 4.1-km Shinku La tunnel will be constructed on the Nimu-Padam-Darcha road link.
• With this, Ladakh will get all-weather road connectivity (working in all weather).

Shinku La tunnel Shall Be Constructed By?

The construction of Shinku La tunnel would be completed by December 2025 and it would cost Rs 1681 crore.

Why Shinku La Tunnel Is Needed?

National Security

• Shinku La tunnel project is very important as far as the security and safety of the country is concerned
• It will help in the movement of our security forces in that region.
• The Shinku La tunnel project is a significant step in terms of security perspective as Nimu in Ladakh is close to Kargil as well as Leh and will help the armed forces in quicker deployment of forces and equipment in the region if there is any tense situation.

• The Shinkun La tunnel is very important for the army in view of the threat from China and Pakistan because the tunnel is more secure than the Srinagar-Drass-Kaksar-Kargil highway near the LoC and the Manali Upshi-Leh highway near the LAC.
• So, with its commencement, army personnel and equipment will be able to come in any season.
• The Indian Army used the Darcha-Padam-Neemo road for arms and other goods after the skirmish with the Chinese Army in 2020.
• Darcha-Padam-Neemo road was prepared by BRO in 2019, but due to cold on this road and snowfall in Shinkun La situated at 16 thousand 703 feet, the army has to face a lot of trouble in this.
