Strategic Importance Of Siyom Bridge To Tackle China: The Siyom Bridge is a state-of-the-art 100-meter long, Class 70 Steel Arch Superstructure over Siyom River in Arunachal Pradesh. Siyom Bridge has a great Strategic Significance to tackle China as it is a gateway to sensitive areas of LAC in Arunachal Pradesh.

 

Why In News?

 

On Jan. 03, 2022, The Defence minister Sri Rajnath Singh inaugurated the Siyom bridge in Arunachal Pradesh, along with 27 other infrastructure projects completed by the Border Roads Organisation.

Background

 

  • It is the top priority of the Government to enhance the operational preparedness of the Armed Forces and ensure socio-economic development of the far-flung regions.
  • The BRO has constructed 3,097 km of roads in Arunachal Pradesh in the last five years, the parliament was informed last month.
  • The flare up between Indian and Chinese troops in Ladakh’s Galwan Valley in June 2020 provided further spur to infra projects on the anvil along the Chinese border.

  • The Siyom bridge on the Along-Yinkiong Road – a 100-meter ‘Class-70’ steel arch superstructure.
  • The Siyom river is a tributary of the Brahmaputra. It flows through the west Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh. Reports say that the new bridge over the river would improve connectivity to upper Siang district and beyond via Along (Aalo).

Strategic Significance Of Siyom Bridge

 

  • The escalations in Galwan and Tawang have put the spotlight on border infrastructure construction with India moving on a war footing to close the gap with China which has speeded ahead in setting up assets – roads, bridges, airstrips and villages – on its side of the LAC.
  • The Siyom Bridge in Arunachal Pradesh is the result of the concerted efforts of the Government and the BRO towards the development of border areas in order to enhance the operational preparedness of the Armed Forces and ensure socio-economic development of the far-flung regions.
  • The development of the Siyom Bridge gains significance in the backdrop of the recent clash between the Indian Army and the Chinese PLA on December 9, 2022 in the Tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh.
  • The Siyom Bridge will facilitate faster induction of troops, heavy equipment like howitzers and mechanised vehicles to forward areas of the Upper Siang district, Tuting and Yinkiong regions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
  • In recent years India has been able to shrink the differential with China in terms of border infrastructure along the 3,488-km LAC by building several roads, tunnels, bridges, troop habitats, permanent defences, helipads and airfields.

What Happened In Tawang Sector?

 

  • On December 09, 2022, The PLA troops tried to transgress the LAC in the Yangtse area of Tawang sector and unilaterally change the status quo.
  • The Chinese attempt was thwarted by our troops in a firm and resolute manner.
  • The ensuing face-off led to a physical scuffle in which the Indian Army bravely prevented the PLA from transgressing into our territory and compelled them to return to their posts.
