UN Human Rights Council Resolution on Russia Ukraine War in news
- Recently, voting on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war was held at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva,
- India abstained from the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva as the Council decided to set up an international commission of inquiry into Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
- On Russia Ukraine Conflict, till now India has abstained from-
- Three votes at the UN Security Council,
- Two at the UN General Assembly in New York,
- Two at the Human Rights Council in Geneva, and
- One at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna.
UNHRC resolution on Russia’s action in Ukraine
- The strongest one to be adopted by the UN system yet, the UNHRC resolution “strongly condemned” aggression by Russia, and
- UNHRC Resolution said it was “gravely concerned” about reports of human rights violations by Russian forces, civilian casualties and the forced displacement of 6,60,000 refugees due to Russian “bombing and shelling” in populated areas.
- Setting up of International Commission for inquiry:
- Vote in Support: 32 countries or nearly two-thirds of the Council voted for the resolution that asked the HRC President to appoint three human rights experts for a year.
- It is mandated to “investigate all alleged violations and abuses of human rights and violations of international humanitarian law, and related crimes.
- Abstained: A total of 13 out of 48 members of UNHRC including India, China, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Sudan, Uzbekistan, and Venezuela abstained from the resolution on Russia Ukraine war.
- Against Voting: Only Russia and Eritrea voted against the resolution.
- Vote in Support: 32 countries or nearly two-thirds of the Council voted for the resolution that asked the HRC President to appoint three human rights experts for a year.
