Women Icons Leading Swacchata (WINS) Awards: WINS Awards 2023 is an initiative of Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) in order to highlight the role played by women in ensuring cleanliness in the country. Women Icons Leading Swacchata (WINS) Awards are also important for UPSC Prelims 2023 and UPSC Mains Exam (GS Paper 2- Various governance initiatives; GS Paper 3- Environment Protection and Conservation Measures by the government).

WINS Awards 2023 in News

Recently, the Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs announced first edition of the ‘Women Icons Leading Swachhata’ (WINS) Awards 2023 on 7th March 2023. WINS Awards were announced on the eve of International Women’s Day 2023.

WINS Awards 2023 Details

Women Icons Leading Swacchata (WINS) Awards are an initiative of Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) to recognize and appreciate the role played by women in ensuring cleanliness and highlight the impact of women in sanitation and waste management in the country.

• Mandate: The Women Icons Leading Swacchata Awards 2023 aim to recognize, celebrate and disseminate inspiring and exemplary initiatives in urban sanitation and waste management by women led organizations and individual women.
• WINS Awards Application: The applications for WINS awards are open from 8th March to 5th April 2023.
• Application Categories: Following categories of people/groups can apply for the WINS 2023 Awards-
  • Self-Help Groups (SHGs)
  • Micro-enterprises,
  • Non-Government Organisations (NGOs),
  • Startups and
  • Individual Women Leaders/Swachhata champions.

Women Icons Leading Swacchata Awards Themes

Women Icons Leading Swacchata Awards Application Form will be made available in all the states. WINS Awards 2023 Applications will be considered under following thematic areas-

• Management of Community/Public Toilets
• Septic Tanks Cleaning Services
• Treatment Facilities (Used Water/Septage)
• Municipal Water collection and /or Transportation
• Operation of Material Recovery Facilities
• Waste to Wealth products
• Treatment Facilities (Solid Waste Management)
• IEC, Training, Capacity Building
• Technology and Intervention and
• Others

WINS Awards Application and Selection Process

• WINS Awards 2023 details will be publicized by the States & Cities on their website, portals, and social media. Citizens are invited to apply for the WINS awards.
  • An application format has been suggested by MoHUA.
• Evaluation and Nomination by Urban Local Bodies (ULBs): They will evaluate entries & nominate up to 5 applicants to the State via the Swachhatam portal.
  • Public felicitation of their nominees as city winners could be organized by the ULBs.
• State-wise Evaluation and Nomination: ULB wise nominations will be evaluated at the State level.
  • At state level up to 3 entries in each category will be nominated.
  • State can organize public felicitation of nominees as State winners.

Women Icons Leading Swacchata Awards

Evaluations of State level nominations will be done at the national level on their innovativeness, impact, uniqueness, sustainability & replicability.

• National level evaluation and Nomination: A Jury will be set up by the MoHUA team to evaluate the applications and select WINS Awards winners in each category.
  • The Jury shall comprise of stakeholders from cities and States, independent experts, brand ambassadors, influencers and industry representatives.
  • WINS Awards Winning entries will be featured in a compendium.
