Key Highlights Of The Report

• In 2022, the global average score on the World Bank’s Women, Business and the Law was 77.1 and this year it is 77 per cent.
• In absolute numbers, the score on the index means that nearly 2.4 billion women of working age still do not have the same rights as men.
• At the current pace of reform, in many countries, a woman entering the workforce today will retire before she will be able to gain the same rights as men.
• Today, just 14 countries — all high-income economies — have laws that give women the same rights as men,” it added.
• Tracking the progress on gender-related legal reforms, the index said only 34 such reforms were recorded across 18 countries in 2022. This was the lowest number since 2001.
• However, Sub-Saharan Africa made significant progress last year. The region accounted for over half of all reforms worldwide in 2022, with seven economies — Benin, the Republic of Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, Malawi, Senegal and Uganda — enacting 18 positive legal changes

• It is worth noting that the UAE is a regional and global leader in enacting legislation and regulations that support women’s rights and workplace roles.
• The UAE’s commitment to this cause dates back to 2012, when the UAE Cabinet passed legislation requiring the presence of women on the boards of government entities, making the UAE the first country in the region and the second in the world to do so.
• In 2015, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, announced the formation of the UAE Gender Balance Council, a federal entity tasked with developing and implementing the UAE’s gender balance agenda.
• The UAE Gender Balance Council’s goals are to close the gender gap in all government sectors, achieve gender balance in decision-making positions, and promote the UAE as a model for gender balance legislation.
• The UAE GBC has worked with various federal entities to introduce and reform over 20 laws concerning employee benefits, equal access to credit, political participation, personal status, the judiciary, wages, freedom of movement, marriage, entrepreneurship, assets, and pensions.
