Here are three new criminal laws that will take effect in India from July 1, 2024:
Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS): This new code will replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC) of 1860. The BNS modernizes and restructures the framework for criminal offenses and penalties in India. Key updates include more stringent punishments for certain crimes and revised definitions of offenses to better reflect contemporary societal values.
Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS): This law will replace the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) of 1973. The BNSS aims to streamline criminal procedures, enhance the efficiency of the judicial process, and ensure quicker resolution of cases. It also incorporates measures to protect the rights of victims and witnesses more effectively.
Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA): This will replace the Indian Evidence Act of 1872. The BSA introduces updated rules of evidence, reflecting advancements in technology and forensic science. It aims to make the process of presenting and evaluating evidence in court more robust and reliable.
